This is a translation of the three-part feature story of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China published by Stand News in 2021. Through interviews with several current and former members of the Alliance’s Standing Committee and longtime volunteers, supplemented with research into the Alliance’s reports and meeting records, the feature present perhaps the most in-depth story of the Hong Kong Alliance from 1989 to 2021: its beginning in May 1989 in support of the student protests in Beijing; the June 4th candlelight vigil in Victoria Park for 30 years; the many human vignettes and poignant moments in between; the arrests of its Standing Committee members under the new National Security Law in Hong Kong; its disbandment in September 2021; and the establishment of the June 4th Museum and its forced shutdown. The saga of the Hong Kong Alliance is part of the social movements in Hong Kong and also an indelible part of the democracy movement in China. Stand News itself was forced to cease operations in December, 2021. The Chinese original is also included.
