Although James Ford Rhodes was a career industrialist, he is best remembered today for his piercing and penetrating histories of the United States during the 19th century, particularly the issue of slavery and the Civil War. His major work, History of the United States from the Compromise of 1850 was published in 7 volumes from 1893-1906, and he won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1918 for his History of the Civil War, 1861-1865
