John Gresham Machen's excellent treatise contrasts the liberal churches with the virtuous and moral teachings of conservative, fundamentalist Christianity.
Published in 1923, Christianity and Liberalism is distinguished for having lost none of its relevance and poignancy in the modern day. Many of its subjects and ideas ring true in the here and now, with notions surrounding Christ's origins and His teachings being undermined by alternative or loose interpretations. Such alternate, or liberal, outlooks were seen as a threat to the rectitude of wider Christianity by Machen, who considered fundamentalist views to be both pure and worthy of strict adherence.
While the liberal churches in general considered Christianity to be primarily a lifestyle characterized by upstanding morals and kind deeds, Machen argues that such attitudes are wrong - it is the doctrine and teachings of the Gospel that come first, and it is those that inspired the ideal and authentic Christian life.
For Machen, the notion of being close to Jesus and God is oversimplified and diluted in the minds of many of those who consider themselves believers. Commonly these notions of Jesus Christ deviate from the actual words of the Gospels; such false impressions undermine belief and affinity with God.
Philosophically and theologically rich, Machen's warnings against a dilution of Christian virtues are as relevant and important today as ever. Machen interprets what he sees as a selective abandonment of Christianity's tenets as culturally damaging and ultimately harmful to all of society.
